After retiring in 1991, Curtiss and his wife moved to Fort Collins, CO where he continued his art career and established Silver Fox Studio. With a slowing economy, they moved back to Virginia where he decided to pursue a degree in business. Upon graduation, Curtiss was recruited by the CIA where he spent twelve years serving as a Contracting Officer.

It was during the last two years with the Agency that he decided to pursue his writing career; opting to tell a story with words as well as pictures. Upon retirement in 2015, Curtiss and his wife moved to Lake Anna, Virginia, where they still live today. His new studio/library contains over a thousand books, by his favorite authors like Clive Cussler, David Baldacci, Nora Roberts, C. J. Box, John Jakes, and John Grisham to name some of his favorites.

He prefers to write outdoor adventures and mysteries, with some of the supernatural and sci-fi tossed in to enhance the reader’s experience. Occasionally, he adds some of his personal experiences into the mix (such as the Matanuska Series).
